Google is expanding its Gemini AI ecosystem across the core Workspace apps — and it’s about to make work a lot more personal.
Starting this month, Gemini Gems, the company’s customizable AI assistants, are rolling out to Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, and Slides, enabling users to create AI-powered workflows tailored to their specific needs — all without leaving the app they’re working in.
Whether you want a chatbot that writes newsletters, summarizes documents, or handles CRM data — you can now build it directly inside your Workspace environment.
What Are Gemini Gems?
Originally launched in August 2024, Gemini Gems were designed to act as mini AI experts inside Google’s enterprise ecosystem. Unlike a general chatbot, each Gem can be customized to perform specific tasks based on your role, industry, or recurring workflows.
Google currently offers pre-built Gems such as:
- Writing Editor
- Brainstormer
- Learning Coach
- Coding Partner
But now, users can go further by creating their own — say, a copywriting assistant tailored to a brand’s tone, or a sales AI trained on internal prospect data.
Build Once, Use Anywhere in Workspace
With this rollout, Gemini Gems are being integrated into the side panel of Workspace apps, giving users instant access as they write emails, format documents, or update spreadsheets.
Key actions supported include:
- Creating or using pre-made Gems
- Performing @-mentions to pull files or folders
- Running task-specific automation without switching tabs
“This helps minimise repetitive prompting,” Google said in its blog post announcing the rollout.
To build a custom Gem, users can head to gemini.google.com/gems/create or use the new “Create a Gem” button within the Workspace panel.
Who Can Use It?
The feature is rolling out over the next few weeks to:
- Gemini Business,
- Advanced, and
- Enterprise customers.
It’s part of Google’s broader push to position Gemini not just as an AI chatbot, but as a platform for AI-powered productivity agents across the Google ecosystem.
What’s Next
As Microsoft continues integrating Copilot across Office apps and startups race to build vertical AI assistants, Google’s move to unify Gemini across Workspace apps — with user-controlled customization — signals a major bet on AI-enhanced knowledge work.
Whether it’s simplifying marketing tasks or supercharging customer support, Gemini Gems could become the default AI assistant layer for millions of users.
And as companies increasingly look for ways to personalize AI to team workflows, Google is now making it possible — right from your inbox.
